Bringing cutting-edge seminars to Puerto Rico

Cambridge BioWebinars is a non for profit outreach project to facilitate science dissemination amongst universities in Puerto Rico, by broadcasting live seminars from the University of Cambridge, UK to faculty and student audiences in universities in Puerto Rico.

One of the most rewarding experiences of being in an academic environment is to attend scientific seminars from external speakers. In these, one learns what other scientists are doing over the world. They allow us to expand our knowledge beyond our fields of study, helping us to keep up with the ever evolving science. Seminars can prompt open discussions, and live peer review, leading to increased scientific quality.  But maybe what is most important is that seminars can be inspiring this can lead us to do better science.

Smaller universities or institutes might not be able to organize external seminar series due to the lack of funding or time. Sometimes increased teaching work load or the lack of a networking connections make it less likely for faculty to schedule such events.

With that limitation in mind and with the goal to increase external seminars in universities in Puerto Rico a group of wonderful volunteers from the University of Cambridge in UK decided to provide a remote seminar series.

The remote seminars consist of a speaker in the University of Cambridge filmed and transmitted live to a remote audience in an university in Puerto Rico. The remote audience consists of graduate and undergraduate students, faculty and university staff.

How it works?

A scientist gives a live talk at the video conferencing facility in the University of Cambridge, UK at a specific date and time. The talk is received by a remote audience in Puerto Rico in an university, or scientific institute.

You can receive the talk using two way video conferencing or one way live streaming. The minimal requirements for streaming is to have a room with speakers, projector and good internet connection. The optimal set up is to have a video conferencing system like polycom that allows biderectional interaction of the audience with the speaker simultaneously.

It is really easy to set up a seminar in Puerto Rico. You just have to book a room and test the connection. We send streaming tests or connection tests a couple of days prior to the talk. Two weeks before we provide customized flyers to help you advertize the event.

How to apply?

We are contacted by faculty, students or scientist using the Seminar Sign Up tab in this website. In addition, we directly contact scientists that might be interested in the seminar content.

We welcome inquiries for topics or specific scientists that you are interested particularly.
